DAY 1
Early Morning – Departure from Chennai
To make the most of the day, it’s recommended to start early from Chennai. The drive from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai is about 200 km and typically takes 4 to 5 hours via the NH38.
Arrival in Tiruvannamalai
Upon arrival, head straight to Arunachaleswarar Temple, one of the most revered temples in Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is famous for its enormous Annamalai Hill, where devotees often undertake a spiritual walk.
Visit Arunachaleswarar Temple
The Arunachaleswarar Temple is a massive temple with beautiful architecture and is one of the largest in Tamil Nadu. The temple is believed to be an embodiment of the sacred Fire element of the Pancha Bhootas (five elements).
You can perform darshan (visit the sanctum), and if time permits, explore the temple complex and its numerous shrines.
The Annamalai Hill, also known as Arunachala, is a sacred hill, and many pilgrims take a walk around it (called Girivalam), which is considered highly auspicious. If you are up for it, you can walk part of the 14 km route.
The Arunachala Hill or Giri Pradakshina (Optional): If you are interested in trekking or taking a spiritual walk, the Giri Pradakshina is the sacred circumambulation of Arunachala Hill. Pilgrims walk the entire 14 km, but you can also choose to walk a shorter distance or take part in a part of the ritual.
Alternatively, you can take a vehicle to enjoy the scenic views around the hill.
Lunch:
After your visit to the temple, stop for a traditional South Indian lunch at one of the local restaurants. Some recommendations include:

- Shri Ramana's Kitchen: For a quiet and relaxed dining experience.
- Sangeetha Restaurant: Known for its variety of South Indian dishes.

Visit Sri Ramana Ashram
Head to the Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram, one of the most important spiritual centers in Tiruvannamalai. It is dedicated to the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, a renowned sage who lived in the area. The ashram is located at the foot of Arunachala Hill and is a peaceful place for meditation, reflection, and contemplation.
You can meditate in the Meditation Hall, visit Sri Ramana Maharshi’s samadhi (final resting place), and spend some quiet time in the serene environment of the ashram.
The Archaeological Museum (Optional)
If you're interested in history and culture, you can visit the Government Museum in Tiruvannamalai. It showcases a collection of ancient sculptures, artifacts, and historical relics, mainly related to the region’s past and its religious significance.
Evening
Return to Arunachaleswarar Temple for Evening Prayer
If you’d like to soak in the spiritual atmosphere before leaving, return to Arunachaleswarar Temple for the evening Aarti (prayer). The evening prayers are a beautiful experience, with the temple's lamps and offerings creating a serene and sacred ambiance.
Stroll Through the Local Market
Before departing, take a walk through the local market near the temple. You can purchase religious souvenirs like sacred thread (rudraksha malas), idols of Lord Shiva, and temple prasadam to take home.
Depart for Chennai
Head back to Chennai in the evening. The drive will take around 4-5 hours, so you should reach back around midnight.
